Lesson 04 Process Video 02

For this video I am sharing a birthday layout from Nick's 8th birthday! I am continuing to transition between weekly based layouts and event based layouts, and this one is a bit of both.

Nick had his 8th birthday and of course, as with many birthdays in this time in our lives, he chose to have it at Chuck E Cheese. These photos are always a challenge, because there are lots of people and lots of energy and lots of crazy activity. So to contrast the darker photos, I chose mostly white journal cards here.

The products in this layout are all from Gossamer Blue, particularly the June and July 2017 Life Pages and Traveler's Notebook kits.

My date card is once again very simple, just the week stamped onto the June card, and the date numbers are from Simple Stories. Each element now stands out on this card in a really fun and visually interesting way, simply by combining fonts and colors.

My photos from this event are a combination of snaps that focus on Nick as the birthday boy, each of the children as I have them, and also of Alan and myself together. In a situation like this it can be difficult to get photos of everyone together, so don't stress over what you aren't able to capture. We can always do group photos at another specific time. Remember, embrace the photos you have.

For this journal card I repeated the Simple Stories alphabet and created a bold title so that you know exactly what we are celebrating here. As memory keepers we really like adding embellishments on the diagonal, so to balance out the title I also added the chipboard piece with the word strip on the lower right hand side. I love these simple journal cards that include a nice white space for journaling and a colorful border to tie it in with the rest of the layout!

Of course I always love to photograph the cake! Each of our kids has their own preference for cake, and Nick has always always ALWAYS loved carrot cake! So that is what he picks for his birthday every year. That will be a story I will include in his personal albums, but here it's a great photo to include along with his cute little pose underneath. Apparently I did not get photos of him blowing out the candles, but this one of him with the candles lit is still awesome.

I had space for another filler card, so I used these diagonal lines as a backdrop for a title card. The label on the card goes off the right edge, so I created my text to almost go off the left hand side for easy balance. The touch of gold is a favorite too!

I am always so thankful whenever someone says I need to get in the photograph, and then they make that happen. It doesn't always happen, and I admit I am pretty awful at asking! But for this layout there was a photo of me and Nick together, and I love it. He is covered in pizza sauce and I love the grin on his face. This picture tells a thousand stories, too!

Here is another journaling card and for this one I wrote my love note to Nick. This is how I approach my journaling quite often, because it makes it easier for me to start writing, and also because I want each of the kids to go through these albums in the years to come, and find all these treasured love notes specifically to each of them. I repeated the diagonal embellishment here, with the star banner on the upper left and a word strip plus epoxy sticker on the lower right.

That wraps up Lesson 04 and our Photo Strategies. I hope you are feeling inspired to bring out your camera and take in the world around you!
